[Bug 462716] [NEW] Recent upgrade crashes xserver

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I recently upgraded my ubuntu and restarted it only to be locked out of
my display.

Now instead of login I see the ubuntu progress image squished up in the
top 10th of the screen then tiled all the way across. It also has many
green and red bars across it. Each tile is not the same. ps auwx |
grep X does not reveal an X server running. Keyboard and mouse are not
responsive at this time.

I have enabled access to the system via ssh. I have also moved
/etc/init.d/gdm to gdm.bak to force the computer to come up with a text
login. I can use my keyboard to login. I have not been able to verify
if the mouse continues to function.

Xserver seems to attempt to fall back to a vesa driver which also fails.
There is not errors in the Xorg.0.log or Xorg.failsafe.log.

There is only the mention:
(II) Cannot locate a core pointer device.
(II) Cannot locate a core keyboard device.
(II) The server relies on HAL to provide the list of input devices.
If no devices become available, reconfigure HAL or disable AllowEmptyInput

I am not sure what package caused the failure. I believe I was installing these packages when the failure happened (from /var/log/apt/term.log)
Setting up linux-headers-generic (2.6.28.16.21) ...
Setting up linux-image-server (2.6.28.16.21) ...
Setting up linux-restricted-modules-server (2.6.28.16.21) ...
Setting up linux-server (2.6.28.16.21) ...
Setting up linux-libc-dev (2.6.28-16.55) ...
Setting up poppler-utils (0.10.5-1ubuntu2.4) ...

Atemping to fall back to an earlier kernel has failed.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
