Yes, I worked that out - when I used a different monitor, the hsync and 
vsync results were as expected.

For this video driver, looks like you're going to have to hardcode your
hsync and vrefresh.  X can't detect your monitor's capabilities so is
using defaults, which appear to not fit your monitor capabilities very
well.
