I assume the bunching up you refer to is caused by the low resolution.
It seems that it chooses 1024x768 without KMS, in which case there
will be more space, but it is still not the native resolution of
1280x1024. From the logs it is clear that it does not manage to read
the EDID in this case either, it just guesses a higher resolution.

Probably this: http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9SA
The Core2 processors are 64-bit processors which are also capable of
running 32-bit operating systems
(http://developer.intel.com/technology/intel64/index.htm). So your
system should be capable of running 64-bit. It's what it's made for.
That being said, it's not really a big deal. I can do without it.
