The xorg-edgers driver doesn't fix the issue on my system:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
$ dpkg -s xserver-xorg-video-intel|grep Version:
Version: 2:2.9.0+git20091026.10946118-0ubuntu0tormod
$ sudo service gdm restart

I still have symptom B (see comment #45). I also tried logging out and
back in again, didn't help.

Is there something else I have to do to in a live CD session to make
sure the upgraded driver is running?
