After installing Ubuntu9.04  by Cd the problem was solved.

@Larry, did you run a upgrade of ubunto to 9.10? (while installing you
get a message that programs are listened as useless and can be removed,
if you accepted the removal you'll get the problem with screen
resolution?)

you might try installing the last version again by a disc or usb stick,
and then upgrade (and not remove the programs that are marked as not
needed)
