Hrm, still is not showing a definite error message, but it seems to be
going over into failsafe mode or at least trying.  Perhaps there is
something kubuntu-specific gone wrong.

You might try removing and reinstalling the nvidia driver, but sorry I'm
not really sure what the problem here is.
