[Bug 433326] Re: [i945g] maximum resolution: 800x600

There is some confusion associated with this bug.

Firstly, when the bug applies, higher modes than 800x600 are simply not available. So, dfrevert's comment on 2009-10-18, does not apply to this bug because xrandr -s 1024x768 will give no such mode available.

Secondly, this problem does not happen (at least didn't for me in two
different monitors) if the monitor supports EDID
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_display_identification_data).
That's why I think most people don't have THIS bug.

Thidly, looking at Xorg log, it's clear that higher resolution modes are
eliminated due to vertical refresh rates being out of range for an
unknown monitor.

Fourthly, I cannot confirm now, but as I recall, when I had this intel
945 card on a non EDID compatible monitor, even if I manually
configured Xorg.conf with a "Monitor" section, specifying decent refresh
rates, this would be ignored, and I would still be limited to low
resolution. I'll confirm that as soon as possible. And if this is the
case, then the issue is with the driver ignoring the Monitor section,
even if EDID information is not available.

Other than that, when the resolution is ok, X is well accelerated
glxgears gives me 60fps on a Celeron Mobile 1.6Ghz with this board and
user interface is smooth.
