[Bug 239722] Re: xorg fails to correctly detect Satellite pro 4600 and 6000 screen resolution
Just re-installed 6.06, all is well with the screen, and here is the
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Back on line & more news.
So, installed 6.06 and all worked (1024 etc). Internet failed so copied xorg.conf to floppy (yes, it has one! As well as all those ports which are skimped these days!).
Next clean installed Ubuntu 8.10. All worked except only 600x.
Put xorg.conf of 6.06 as listed above on (copy/replace) and all ok ie 1024x and all lower resolutions.
So have 8.10 and all fine.
As internet now working took suggested upgrade route to 9.04 which took hours and gave a lot of error messages that it seemed to bypass including ..."generic event extension" missing on Display ":0.0"
Now restarting.... and all OK!
Says it's 9.04 when asked and still at 1024etc and all lower resolutions.
The xorg.conf file has changed it's size so something is new there, and it doesn't recognise the display.
Looks like I'll stick with Ubuntu 9.04 for now. Can send the new xorg.conf file if you want to compare.
It seems logical to assume the 6.06 xorg.conf will make all versions below 9.10 work in my laptop.
Anyone wanting to try can copy and paste from the above posting. Good luck!
