[Bug 452096] [NEW] kwin uses way too much CPU when there's no activity
You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace
Running karmic beta as of 2009-10-15, here's 'top' on my box, which is
sat here doing nothing except run 'top' in a console:
2075 ed 20 0 452m 35m 23m R 13 1.8 0:29.45 kwin
1328 root 20 0 279m 110m 14m S 11 5.5 1:05.90 Xorg
2127 ed 20 0 363m 38m 16m S 1 1.9 0:02.23 konsole
2654 ed 20 0 448m 65m 29m S 1 3.3 0:07.86 quassel
2082 ed 20 0 675m 54m 25m S 1 2.7 0:09.28 plasma-desktop
3034 ed 20 0 19132 1396 980 R 1 0.1 0:00.23 top
467 root 15 -5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.11 kjournald
This is with compositing turned on. I suspect that it's re-drawing the
screen with every vertical refresh interrupt. I've been told before in
another bug that this is normal, but eating my CPU for no reason is not
normal, and compiz certainly doesn't behave like this.
I have an intel GMA965 if it makes any difference?
If I turn off compositing, `top` looks like this:
1328 root 20 0 321m 138m 12m S 3 6.9 5:13.03 Xorg
2127 ed 20 0 370m 41m 16m S 1 2.1 0:14.20 konsole
2620 ed 20 0 686m 266m 28m S 1 13.3 1:31.42 firefox
4508 ed 20 0 19132 1396 980 R 1 0.1 0:00.33 top
1503 postgres 20 0 72020 1248 284 S 0 0.1 0:01.42 postgres
2082 ed 20 0 675m 54m 24m S 0 2.7 0:34.88 plasma-desktop
i.e. it's nowhere to be seen now.
This is a Kubuntu deal-breaker for me :(
