I made a mistake, the current drivers will work, as long as the
following is in xorg.conf

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen 1"
    Device      "** ATI Radeon (generic)               [radeon]"
    Monitor     "My Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       24
        Modes       "1280x1024"
        ViewPort    0 0
    EndSubsection
