[Bug 486722] [NEW] Resolution for login window and user session autoconfigured to wrong resolution on fresh installation

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

When I install Ubuntu I am autoconfigured the wrong resolution for my 1024x768 screen (1600x1200). In System-Preferences-Display I can change the resolution to 1024x768 but the refresh rate is stuck at 0hz (Impossible) and the monitor is identified as "Unknown." After this adjustment the session is in the correct resolution.
Unfortunately the System-Preferences-Display adjustment does not effect the login dialogue which is still configured to 1600x1200. This means I am unable to see all of the features of the display window because they are situated off the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Before the Login Screen appears there is the loading screen (Brown with the lights going along a line under the logo for Ubuntu) and this is also set to 1600x1200.

I use Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit.

gdm:
  Installed: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1

 *** 2.28.1-0ubuntu1 0

        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I think this bug deserves attention because it looks unprofessional and impedes usability. I can't lock screen or put to sleep without logging in because it is off the screen.
Thank you!
