Have you tried running nvidia-xconfig with the 185.18.36-0ubuntu9
driver and it's
source file installed. Be sure to look at the supported cards listed in
the driver(aptitude show nvidia-glx-185)
At one time I had to reinstall the 2.6.31-15-generic kernel,
nvidia-glx-185 driver and its source file and then run
nvidia-xconfig before I could start up without the low graphics mode
message. The standard generic xorg.config
file did not work but the one generated with nvidia-xconfig generated a
classic style xorg.conf file which worked
fine. The new xorg.conf and nvidia proprietary drivers sometimes suck
using Karmic. Hope this solves your
problem.
