While searching the net again about this problem I came across this
post: http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8337536

Apparently the problem is a incompatibility with compiz. After I tried
"metacity --replace&" at the command line, blender is working fine, no
screen corruption. Rendering is working too.
