I am also getting this bug.
I have karmic and the latest driver packages as I have added https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only to my repository.

Sometimes my monitor just turns off while booting up, then I have to restart.
I never tried xfix considering that I don't have any xorg.conf
