I am confirming this bug as described by the original poster.

The system is a Dell Dimension 2400.  The graphics chipset is by Intel
(845gv I think...the system isn't readily available as I only provide
support to the gentleman who owns it.)

I have turned compiz off.  I have turned all power management off.  The
screen freezes once every day or two.  The mouse pointer can move and
the desktop is still there but the desktop is frozen.  The only way to
get the system going again is to do a hard reboot.

I hope this can be resolved soon as I will loose some users.
