I initially filed this bug (as #406651.)
I've been using the work around remove/install to get my screen resolution back when I take a kernel upgrade.

Unfortunately this technique now fails during the install after taking
the 2.6.31-16 kernel update.

I've attached the output from the install session and the subsequent
make.log.
