some of the work arounds suggested in the thread may be helpful to
others with similar problems.

This kind of problem seems common for different reasons. Some have it
when they are using a weather applet and then myself who does not use
them, and receives the freezing panels after a kernel update.

After "Karmic" kernel updates, the panels are unresponsive.
