And this solves the error "(EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context:
unknown error (null)":

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core

I know this is a big package, but I think it should be a dependency of
xvfb in order to make it consistently work if the underlying problem
can't be found.
