Running the  2.6.32-7-generic #10-Ubuntu SMP kernel instead, the
symptoms are the same except that the screen is NOT offset . The tiny
text window appears on the actual upper-left of the screen, with the
rest of the screen filled with the normal Xfce blue screen background
image.

Again, trying to switch to a tty with ctrl-alt-F1 through F6 results in
a useless screen, with a multicolored background; switching back to the
X display works with alt-F7.
