Still no luck. I did the following tests:

A: Downgraded as follows (using Brians PPA):
libdrm-intel1 2.4.14-1ubuntu1 -> 1:2.4.11-2+karmic3
libdrm2 2.4.14-1ubuntu1 -> 1:2.4.11-2+karmic3
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 -> 5:2.8.0-2-gb0aa94f
Result: Freeze

B: As A, plus enabling KMS by making a file in /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf with the following content:
options i915 modeset=1
Result: Freeze

C: As B, plus replacing xserver-xorg-video-intel with the version from comment #70
Result: Freeze

Doesn't look like we can use the same solutions as for bug 456902 and
bug 496187.
