OK, I have just tried https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive
/graphics-testing

I have the following packages installed:
1:2.4.11-2+karmic3 
5:2.8.0-2-gb0aa94f 
Using the standard karmic kernel 2.6.31.17.30

Still produces the freeze.
