Using the touchpad on my ASUS laptop with Ubuntu 9.10, I noticed that:
If I press a letter key (such as 'z') while moving the mouse, the mouse movement freezes for a second.
To me it seemed like a bug, but I guess it's actually a 'feature'.

It can be turned off in gnome by: system/preferences/mouse/touchpad;
uncheck 'disable touchpad while typing'.
