maybe i was too optimistic.
after today's upgrades, desktop can't load anymore with 24 bits.
there was xorg update to 1.7.3.902-1ubuntu7 , but i reverted it to the original 1ubuntu6, and the system still doesn't work properly. something else broke it, but i don't have the time to check them all.
