[Bug 509468] Re: [i945gm] x server crashes at random times (karmic)

Thank you for filing this bug report. I see you have already had a look
at bug 500208, so you know what additional information we need in order
to do anything with this bug (unlike that bug report, you used the
ubuntu-bug command, which gives us information about your hardware among
other things).

> If Ubuntu makes reporting bugs in a way they will accept harder than
switching to another distribution, guess what will happen?

We will get fewer bug reports, those that we get will be of higher
quality, and we will be able to handle a greater fraction than what we
do today? ;-)

Seriously, while we wish it would be very easy to report any bugs, we
need to balance this with our need to have sufficient information to act
on a bug report. Our need to have this tested in Lucid is somewhat time
dependent. At this time Karmic has already been released for months.
After a release it is much more difficult to fix something since we
don't want to risk breaking installations that are already working (see
[1]). Fixing bugs also takes time, and at this time Lucid will probably
be close to release before a fix for a bug in Karmic is ready to be
rolled out. It therefore makes much more sense to focus on bugs that are
verified to exist in Lucid. Most xorg-bugs are hardware specific, so
while other bugs can easily be verified in the development version by a
developer, they would need the exact same hardware to check an xorg-bug,
and that is obviously not possible.

So if you are not willing or able to test the development version, we
will not have the information we need to act on it and the bug will
eventually be closed. This does not mean that we don't think you have a
real problem or that it is not annoying. We also acknowledge that this
may be difficult or time consuming, but we have no easy way of
retrieving the information we need.
