I have the same problem with an Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series
Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (Kernel driver in use: i915) on
Kubuntu (Karmic Koala 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10
17:01:44 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

Setting "#use_animation_program= 0" keeps the game from crashing but
displays a gray window after logging in or trying to create a new
player.
