I've had a couple more freezes since I left the last message, and they
didn't take nearly as long to happen. I still don't know why - neither
of them involved having desktop effects enabled, and I hadn't done any
updates in the meantime.

I'll put the xorg-edgers stuff back and see what I can achieve.
