I don't have any info on if mine would have worked with an earlier version
 as I only put ubuntu on this machine a couple weeks ago.

When the system freezes, if I let it restart with the external connected it
seems to start in a "safe" state, with very low resolution on both displays
so I'm able to work the display slowly up to till it fails, it would be interesting 
to know if yours also is functional up to 800x600 (for the external)
