Hi - I had Virtual set that way already.
I just tried booting with the latest updates, a few minutes ago, with
the 2.6.32-12-generic kernel, and it failed in recovery mode as well
as in normal mode. But it does boot properly with the 2.6.32.11
kernel, at least in recovery mode, with the proper screen view. It
does not start reliable with that kernel in graphics mode, though it
did the first time I tried it a few minutes ago.

It's completely normal that you lose data on "Windows" platforms.
That's why you have a UNIX or Linux or BSD server for backups.
