Message #43677
[Bug 503674] Re: [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later
On January 20th I read the post by Bartosz,"Please apply this patch and
attach your Xorg.0.log file after that."
Naturally, being someone with minimal technical expertise with linux,
and naturally being concerned that now my computer finally works, not
wanting to implement something on my computer until I at least
understood (at least partially) what it was, I sent a private email to
Bartosz (below, also sent on January 20th) but did not receive a reply
to the email. Instead now 2 weeks later Bartosz updates this as "low"
importance. For my computer it is "low" since my problem is solve..for
other? Not a minor problem, this bug in upgrading from Dapper to the
latest edition. It is strange that some admins on this site seem to
think the novice users should just run anything on their computer
without knowing what it does, after things are finally working..

"Hi.

Hello Bartosz,
I appreciate your getting back to me but am somewhat confused by your
response. Could you clarify my question below.
1. Why should I apply a patch when my computer is finally working?
2. Are you associated with Ubuntu in any formal capacity? I am also
worried about ruining my monitor if something goes wrong with the
patch, given that my teaching duties resume in 5 days. I would hate to
have something go wrong now that things are finally, finally working
again after 6 pages of help on ubuntuforums and 20+ messages on
launchpad. Is there an assurance you can give? Can a patch be "undone"
any time, even if my monitor isn't working because of it?
3. I also don't know what it means to "apply a patch" even if 1 and 2
are answered. I would need precise directions about what to do with
this text file "dcc2.patch" -- assuming I have answers also for 1 and
2.
4. I don't believe you have replied to this earlier question:
"is there any chance the next version of Ubuntu will incorporate
this so people with insignia or similar monitors, who had no problems
with Drake but had problems with Heron and Koala, will have things work
automatically (with default settings) in the next version? "
Thanks in advance for clarifying these in a way a relative novice like
myself, can understand.
Harel
