Re: [Bug 521610] Re: trying to activate nvidia-195 driver on freshinstallation, hangs, have to reboot
Hi Andreas,
I manually introduced 195 (and possibly 190) whilst chasing the problem.
I have since cleaned up using the following code (which I found
elsewhere):
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo aptitude install linux-generic linux-headers-generic
sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop
sudo nvidia-uninstall
sudo aptitude purge $(dpkg -l | awk '/nvidia/{print $2}')
sudo apt-get install nvidia-common
I then reinstalled the following packages using Synaptic Package
Manager:
nvidia-kernel-common
nvidia-glx-185
nvidia-settings
nvidia-185-modaliases
....and I've now successfully activated 185.
When I now try to install and activate 190, I get the following error:
E:/var/cache/apt/archives/nvidia-
glx-190_190.53-0ubuntu1~karmic~nvidiavdpauppa10_i386.deb:
subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 2
I'm not sure now if 190 came with karmic. It would be nice to install 190
and even 195, however I'm now not clear if I actually have found a bug??
I manually inserted 190 (or was it 195?) yesterday whilst chasing a
different problem with my video card. It worked well and today I intended to
clean up, document the steps, and install 195.
I'm happy to drop it. I'll accept your advice on the matter.
Regards,
John.

The 195 driver shouldn't be available in karmic, so I guess the bug here
is why you had it available as a choice? Or maybe you have a repo
providing it in your /etc/apt/sources.list?

Bug description:
A fresh installation of UBUNTU 9.10, trying to activate nvidia driver
version 195 under Administration -> Hardware Drivers. It gets about 1/3
through the installation and then stops indefinitely. I tried it several
times. I eventually manually installed 195 drivers directly from nvidia
site.
I have a GT 220 graphics card running on an Asus K8N4-E Deluxe motherboard
with an AMD64 single core CPU and with 3GB RAM. I'm running 32 bit UBUNTU
