ok I have been using my laptop mostly,  so today I turned on the
desktop,  downloaded several weeks worth of Ubuntu updates... rebooted
the machine...

switched from "no visual effects"  to "normal visual effects"  .. and
the machine locked up within 12 seconds.. same hardcore lockup where
even the mouse can't move.

I was hoping that with that many updates something would work.
