i have same problem, also when Visual Effects from Appearance Preferences  is set to "None".
I hate this problem !

My Spec:
Ubuntu 9.10
NVIDIA Drivers 190.53 (form nvidia's site)
CPU athlon x2
GPU NVIDIA 8300
