[Bug 493826] [NEW] Unable to login - monitor complains about screen resolution
You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Binary package hint: firefox-3.5
I have a Dell E176 FP monitor, and some sort of ATI graphics card.
Ubuntu 9.10.
Synopsis:
* When booting using kernel 2.6.31.x, I never get a login prompt or screen, and the monitor says "Unable to display resolution". CTRL+ALT+F keys don't have an effect.
* When booting using kernel 2.6.27-11 I can hit CTRL+ALT+F2 and log in, then start KDE. Then the GUI works fine.
* I tried editing xorg.conf but it didn't help.
Background:
* When I first installed Ubuntu on this machine, I noticed that I would rarely be able to see any of the boot sequence, because my monitor was saying "Unable to display resolution". However, as soon as X started, I would be fine.
* This morning, I had a note saying that there were important updates for Ubuntu. I had not used this machine since last Friday, so I installed the updates. I was prompted to restart, which I did. After restarting, I would get the "Unable to display resolution" regardless of which 2.6.31.x kernel I tried booting with, even in recovery mode.
* Luckily I figured out that the 2.6.27-11 kernel was still booting. I tried editing xorg.conf to the best of my ability, but this is still the only kernel that works for me. Note that the "ati" Driver is something I added myself. It didn't work without that either. The recovery mode uses "vesa" as driver.
Next steps:
* I just edited my /grub/menu.lst and added vga=0x31B, and I'm going to try rebooting to see what happens.
* I'll try to find the change history for updates so that I can attach it to the ticket.
