[Bug 390773] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.04 xserver won't start after update

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I can't tell which package caused the error, but after the latest update
ubuntu starts in console mode. After logging in I tried "startx" but the
XServer didn't start, instead it complained, that "libstdc++.so.6" was
missing. The exact error message reads as follows:

"startx" says:

xauth: /home/"username"/.Xauthority not writeable, changes will be ignored
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/"username"/.Xauthority
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/"username"/.Xauthority
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/"username"/.Xauthority
/usr/bin/X11/X: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/libsmbios.so.2)
xinit: Server error.
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/"usrname"/.Xauthority

"sudo startx" says:

X: warning; process set to priority -1 instead of requested priority 0
/usr/bin/X11/X: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/libsmbios.so.2)
giving up.
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to xserver
xinit: no such process (errno 3): Server error.

Problem is reproduceable and happend on any system tested.

I hope this helps to fix the problem.

** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu)

         Status: New
