I have the same PITA as Mark, not being able to pipe anything on an asus
eee 1005, running karmic koala (regular, not NBR) with an icelandic
keyboard layout. I haven't been able to get a pipe or '| ' with any key
combination I've tried in a gnome-terminal window. I've added the
outputs requested on

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKeyboardDetection

and also see attached a pdf of the keyboard layout as generated by the
'keyboard indicator applet' I just added to my upper panel. It appears
to me from the layout picture that no pipe is included.

xkb and gconf (as I wasn't able to add multiple attachments to the
post):
