Let's focus this bug report on the blank screen issue.  Sounds like just
a vt mapping bug.

For the crash, please file a separate bug report.  Probably easiest
thing would be to update to latest lucid, reproduce the crash, and let
apport capture the trace.  If that doesn't work for some reason, see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for a guide for manually collecting
this info.
