[Bug 526698] [NEW] switching from X to VT then back to X not working (ACPI related?)
You have been subscribed to a public bug:
I am pretty sure that this is an old bug re-incarnated but I do not find
the problem described in terms that seem completely similar. I am
running ubuntu 9.10. using Nvidia 185 driver on an i7 cpu and asus mobo
with out over-clocking anything. The hardware seems good. Here is the
problem:
When I switch out of X into a VT (e.g. ctrl-alt-f1), upon switching back
to X, the X screen is visible for a few seconds (the mouse can be moved)
but the screen acts as though it is going to sleep; that is, the video
signal is briefly displayed but the display device notes a change in the
video signal and the screen goes blank from signal loss.
I do not think that X is crashing though since the mouse and keyboard
still work -- I can go back to the same VT (the VT's all seem to work)
and then again attempt to go back to X. When I do this, the video
signal _briefly_ returns but again the display device soon notes a
change in the video signal and the screen goes blank from signal loss.
It is as though X is waking up but then going back to sleep. Also, if I
momentarily press the computer power button, the power-off applet
apparently runs since if I then press enter the system powers down (and
rebooting is the only "fix", at least I tried killing X but this does
not seem to help.).
The problem can also occur if the video signal changes mode in some way
(like if I turn of GPU screen sizing). Also if the computer is left
idle and times out, the display will not come back (though the power-
button-applet remains working). This seems to be ACPI related. I did
not yet try completely disabling ACPI in the bios. This is not the
first time this has happened to me with 9.10.
In fact, if I re-install 9.10, the problem goes away but will eventually
return. I am supposing that some change to some configuration occurs
but I am not knowingly making such a change. The only thing that I can
think of that could cause the problem is that I am trying to get Dead
Space to run (which it resolutely refuses to do). I would really like
to know what is causing this. It is really annoying to say the least
(and maybe keeping me from playing Dead Space).
One other thing is that I am using a TV with HDMI control (available but
not enabled). Maybe the TV is telling the video card to power down? I
have no other ready display to test as yet.
** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: Incomplete
