It seems you've got a different bug to the original poster; could you
please boot into the Live CD, and run “ubuntu-bug
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” from a terminal?  That will attach all sorts
of useful logs.

You've just misread that; nouveau supports all nvidia cards newer than
the riva 128.  The list is incomplete.
