i have the same problem with my nvdia 9600 card. i have the latest
driver for it, can't check number due to a bug with gnome shell.

the default graphics application has handed all calibration, including
monitor settings to my nvdia x server settings app, and refuses to
acknowledge even my screen size now. This may or may not have something
to do with the gnome shell screencast picking up little other than the
pointer and a flickering screen.
