I think I may have found another workaround. If possible, try doing it the old-school way - add/update monitor and screen sections in your xorg.conf based on the mode info in your xorg.log, similar to comment 17 in the fdo bug at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17255
This is similar to what is described on the Ubuntu Troubleshooting Resolution Problems wiki at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Resolution
You may also need the 2.6.33 kernel (or it's DRM as mentioned by Bryce
in comment 10) to get around the (II) intel(0): Not using default mode
"1920x1080" (monitor doesn't support reduced blanking) error.
