Unless Bryce found something amiss in the logs I attached, I thought I
should add that it dawned on me I was using the Mozilla build of
Firefox.

 I'd installed it using the Ubuntuzilla repo:

After reverting to the Ubuntu build I've not been able to duplicate the
aforementioned "freeze".

I'll not change the status just yet but I will follow up. Sorry if I
wasted someones time.
