[Bug 348914] [NEW] Display intermittently fails on login with Samsung 205BW
You have been subscribed to a public bug:
I have just installed 8.10 on a new machine that has a Intel 3100
graphics and Samsung 205BW monitor (lspci attached). Sometimes I can
get to login screen and the graphics are perfect, but most of the time
the screen just blanks out. I can still login 'in the dark' because I
hear the ubuntu login prompt but even if I do, it remains blank.
Interestingly, when selecting between boot options between kernel
versions 2.6.27.11 and 2.6.27.7, the earlier kernel seemed to work
slightly better in that I get a display more regularly (say 40% I get
display at login compared to say 10%). With a different monitors I have
no problem. Clearly the monitor may be root cause, but as a Chartered
Engineer, I would call this a bug in either the kernel or Xorg because
of the intermittent nature - sometimes I get a display other-times not.
Note once I am in, there is no problem with display and everything works
fine in maximum resolution. Also, when booting after GRUB, the display
is always perfect (i.e. whilst watch the progress bar) - its just before
and when you get to login stage.
I have researched this problem extensively and made changes to my
Xorg.conf as a result to provide explicit info to X regarding necessary
205BW resolution, hsync, vsync settings etc (file attached) since some
forums suggest the problem lies with incorrect ESID from the 205BW.
However, it still does not work properly. I have even installed the
latest Ubuntu alpha 6 release (jaunty) but again I have the same
problem. Even changing Xorg.conf file from default, whilst it seemed to
work a few times, at the last login it failed again so I am back to a
very frustrating problem - please don't make me buy a new monitor! -
Thanks.
