There is no adequate response to the Ctrl-Alt-F1 (...F6) keys, i.e. the KDE desktop stays on the screen, the mouse cursor disappears, but nothing further happens. The /sbin/getty processes are running for tty1 to tty6. sudo chvt [1-6] has the same effect. Initially, on Ctrl-Alt-F8 the mouse cursor used to reappear (i.e. switching back to the GUI worked). After the latest updates, trying to switch to a virtual terminal seems to freeze the GUI and, since there is no accessible terminal and a frozen GUI, requires a reboot.
  
  I suspect that the problem has something to do with the framebuffer.

  What I already did:
- 1. place Option "DontVTSwitch"  "false" in xorg.conf (does not help)
