I suspect that your freeze after suspend might be bug #535640, but
without logs it's difficult to tell.

The strange screen on startup seems like it might be a kernel
modesetting issue.  Could you please boot your computer and run “apport-
collect 528026” if it displays the 1/4 screen bootsplash problem?
