A similar problem exists with resuming an docked x61 with laptop lid
closed. Here is the test:

The following test resulted in a black screen of a Thinkpad x61:

1) Boot laptop in docking station, lid closed
2) Remove laptop from docking station
3) Open lid and wakeup laptop
4) Close lid and sleep
5) Place laptop in docking station
6) Wakeup with lid closed
7) Display stays black

The following process leads to a working display from step 7) onward:
a) ssh to laptop
b) open lid
c) run xrandr on display :0.0
