The problem still exists on my system under Lucid too. It seems to be
connected to the compiz fusion icon. If I do not load it at start-up my
system will freeze after a few mins forcing a hard shutdown. As long as
I have the compiz fusion icon running it seems fine.

Though this is only in the main user account. All the guest accounts
have to have graphics switched off or the system will freeze up,
regardless of the compiz fusion icon being installed.
