Since I reported this bug two things to note:
1. Logout no longer turns off the backlight permanently - the login screen turns it on
2. CTRL-ALT-F1 does, but CTRL-ALT-F7 turns it on again - the system is usable

Also: Lucid beta 1 still is affected
