Bryce, installed the ppa see this grub.cfg entry:

linux   /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.33-997-generic

nomodeset

and cat /proc/version:

Do note even though it says to boot "nomodeset" KMS is actually active.
That just started happening today with the 1 April aptitude -q update
safe-upgrade.

If the next crash is such that "ssh" will work I'll try the wiki
directions.
