[Bug 511487] Re: right click on desktop or launch nautilus causes screen to display red-orange color lines

Hi Yasas, I fixed your description - it's a good idea to make it
descriptive rather than just "vga crashes". :-)

Also, I don't think you're actually seeing a crash. A crash would leave
you at the login prompt and/or leave a backtrace printed in the end of
your Xorg.0.log but there is none. Instead, you are probably seeing an
"X freeze".

While we have reports of problems from other Xpress 200M owners, most of
them are not seeing the problem you describe so I don't think this is a
widespread issue, and may be something very particular about your
hardware setup.

For now, would it be possible for you to take a photo of the screen when
it's showing the corrupted graphics? Sometimes that can give a strong
clue about what is going wrong.

radeontool can be used to assist in debugging this issue. To install it
from the command line, use this command:

    sudo apt-get install radeontool

After installing it, you run it like this:

    sudo radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_good.txt
    sudo radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a working screen (for any driver),
and once in the broken case (either from the tty console or logged into
the sick box remotely). Attach both of those to this bug report, and we
can then forward this issue upstream. Thanks ahead of time!

+                 description: VGA compatible controller
+                 product: RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200M]

  Here's what i've done exactly.

  1. made a fresh install of lucid alpha2 (kernal 2.6.32.11)========>
Playmouth is ok but system crashes instantly when i try launch any
  application (even terminal / nautilus)

  Then....

  2. I've installed karmic (fresh install)
  3. Upgraded to lucid alpha2 straight away. (grub shows 2.6.31 and 2.6.32 the both options)
4.When i booted from 2.6.31 there is not plymouth visible. instead it says cannot connect to plymouth.
5.When i booted from 2.6.32.11 there is plymouth but system crash instantly when launching any application. (like i said it can't launch even the terminal)
  6. That is why i provided the output (you requested) from the 2.6.31 boot. coz i can't open gedit or nautilus from the 2.6.32. it crashes like hell.
