I have been experiencing this periodically on a new Lenovo ThinkPad
X201s with Intel graphics. After grub, the screen goes black, but the
boot continues to load. Plymouth is not displayed. Following a period of
disk I/O, entering the keystrokes Ctrl-Alt-Del <enter> successfully
reboots the system. I believe gdm is running, but is not displayed.

If, instead of rebooting, I follow the gdm login sequence of <enter>
password <enter>, there is more disk activity indicating the desktop
being loaded, just not displayed.
